OlliOlli: Switch Stance besides sporting a rather clever skating related sub-title bundles together both the original game OlliOlli and its improved sequel OlliOlli 2: Welcome to Olliwood. Bail out though and it’s back to the beginning for you. Much like the Tony Hawk’s series before it, stringing along the longest and most flashy combos is not only OlliOlli’s big focus but also its greatest hook. ![]() Every stage you fly through is its own linear 2D playground of rails to grind and ramps to trick off of with the best runs accomplished by those who take advantage of them all. The skateboarding genre isn’t what it used to be, let’s put it that way.Įnter Roll7’s OlliOlli series, a refreshing take of the genre that’s part auto-scroller (or auto-roller in this case) and part trick-based juggling act. Looking at the landscape now it’s a completely different story though with EA’s excellent Skate series no more and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 an absolute disaster. Putting a number on the amount of hours I’ve lost to grinding rails, spinning over half-pipes and pulling off insanely ridiculous combos isn’t easy but let’s just say it’s in the hundreds at least. Couple that with the bouncy music from artists like French DJ Woodwire, and you’ve got a game almost any skateboarding fan will love. There was once a time when Tony Hawk ruled the gaming scene, his yearly skateboarding releases something to get excited about. There are some bland objectives here and there, such as one that forces you to spin 3,600 degrees, but the moment-to-moment gameplay is fast and exhilarating. It’s the perfect game to get a quick session or two in while also having enough depth to warrant longer playtime. ![]() Read More: Skate 3‘s Sickest Trick Is A Rube Goldberg Machine And you need those points to unlock more customisation items for your skater. From riding down stairs with the back two wheels (firecracker) to newly added tricks such as the 360 pressure flip, OlliOlli World is a skateboard nerd’s paradise. And wow, there are a lot of tricks! The game features many of the same ones from previous entries, but there’s also a smattering of additional moves. Sure, there’s a throwaway story here, but it’s really just a setup to bomb hills and trick over stuff. I’m expecting Marceline to show up riding her battle-ax as a board or Finn and Jake to high-five in the background.īut OlliOlli World is all about the tricks. With its laid-back, Rocket Power-like dialogue and vibrant, Adventure Time-esque aesthetics, it never takes itself too seriously. Silly premise, I know, and the game is fully aware of this farce. Your goal: To reach Gnarvana, a higher plane of skateboarding, and take your place as the next liaison between mere mortals and the skate gods. Roll7’s OlliOlli World does grind onto a slightly crowded scene, but it shines brightly with its striking visuals and impressive assortment of tricks. ![]() All that’s to say, a lot is happening in the skateboarding genre right now, and that’s very exciting. There’s also last year’s minimalist meditative experience The Ramp, and looking ahead, a new Skate game on the horizon. The skateboarding genre has seen some stellar releases in that time, including the highly customisable Session, Skater XL, and the remastered bundle Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2. It’s been seven years since OlliOlli2: Welcome to Olliwood, Roll7’s 2015 skateboarding platformer.
